Sometimes, the hardest part is figuring out where to start. We're here to help.
One important decision you will make as a new mom, is whether to breastfeed your baby. There are so many benefits of breastfeeding, including a lengthly list of health benefits to your child. Breastfeeding also provides emotional closeness between mom and baby, has health benefits for the breastfeeding mom, is natural and good for the environment, and saves money on formula and bottles.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding your child for at least 12 months, and as long after that as mom and baby want.
Taking a breastfeeding preparation course is a good place to start. These courses are often offered through the hospital you will deliver at, your obstetrician's office, or your pediatrician's office, usually during your last trimester.
There are also many excellent books on the subject of breastfeeding and having these on hand for reference before and after your baby is born is a good idea.
Another great way to prepare yourself is to talk to girlfriends who have breastfed, since they can really give you honest and helpful insight into what to expect and to know.
There are several things that you should purchase during your pregnancy.
The first thing that you will need ito purchase is a good maternity / nursing bra. You will notice during your pregnancy that your breasts will increase in size, often by as much as two cup sizes. It is extremely important that you wear a good and supportive bra. A maternity / nursing bra offers extra support during your pregnancy and nursing time.
The time to buy a maternity / nursing bra is as soon as you feel your current bra tighten, which is often by the end of the first trimester. A nursing bra is just like a maternity bra, but it has cups that drop down so that you can access your breasts for feeding.
Another item that you may want to purchase early in your pregnancy is a belly band. A belly band is something you wear in the early stages of your pregnancy when your pants are too tight to button, but you are not yet ready for maternity pants. It can also be worn in the months following your baby's birth, while you are transitioning back to your pre-pregnancy wardrobe.
This is the time to purchase some basic nursingwear items so that you are prepared when the baby arrives. If you are having a baby shower, a great idea is to set up a gift registry with Milk, so that your friends and family can purchase some of these things for you.
