It's known by many names...mommy brain, pregnancy brain, baby brain...and the struggle is real!
For most of us, this is the first time in our lives that we aren't as sharp as usual. This phenomenon of forgetfulness is foreign to us at first but a regular occurrence for new moms.
One study, conducted at the University of British Columbia, states:
"Our most recent research shows that previous motherhood alters cognition and neuroplasticity (capacity to change and adapt) in response to hormone therapy, demonstrating that motherhood permanently alters the brain" says the leading researcher, Dr. Liisa Galea. "Hormones have a profound impact on our mind. Pregnancy and motherhood are life-changing events resulting in marked alterations in the psychology and physiology of a woman."
In addition to actual physiological changes to your brain due to hormones in pregnancy and motherhood, sleep deprevation also plays a large factor. So the next time you have a case of momnesia, get a good night's rest and take heart that you are in good company!
